1 – The Power of Reading (This Blog)

Hello my friends!

Today is a very exciting day as we are launching this blog to assist you in going to the next level in your training, so that you can elevate yourself in the 5 Areas of Focus of the Family Unicity Network.  Whether you are a member or not, this blog will be of great benefit to you if you are ready to receive the knowledge and wisdom it contains.

Let’s review the 5 Areas of Focus now so that they are fresh in your mind as you begin reading this blog.

5 Areas of Focus

  1. Joy & Happiness
  2. Financial Freedom (Time & Attention)
  3. Purpose & Fulfillment
  4. The Power to Create & Manifest
  5. Connection & Community

Reading and engaging with this blog will make a very positive difference in your life.  Notice I didn’t say “this blog” will make a difference in your life.  This information contained in this blog will certainly be very powerful, however, the difference this blog can make for you personally is 100% dependent on you! Only YOU can read, reflect and generate insights that will affect how you feel, what you think, and what you do which will ultimately impact the results that manifest in your life.

I promise this blog will always be entirely about you.  I will not write for the purposes of showing off all that I know or to satisfy some desire to be a “motivational speaker.”  I have no desire to be a “blogger” for the sake of being a “blogger.”  Instead, this blog will be intentionally designed to be of benefit to you in your real life so that you can become and achieve all that you desire to become and achieve.

Since this is a written blog.  Let’s begin with the value of reading as it pertains to your success in life.  Reading itself  is a success principle. The most successful people on the planet read… a lot.   Listening to audio recordings and attending events are also very powerful and necessary. All three ways of absorbing information impact your brain in different ways. In order to increase your success quotient you must engage in all three methods because they will cause you to develop the neural pathways for success exponentially faster.  This is why we share this information in all 3 mediums.

Think about this idea for a moment.  If you were overweight and you wanted to get in shape, you could start going to the gym and working out 3 or 4 times a week and you certainly benefit from this process. However, if you continue to eat junk food everyday, your progress would be very slow and you would likely never achieve your goal.  The body needs good fuel for your workouts. In fact, only working out while feeding your body garbage food could potentially begin to have a negative impact on you as you would not be getting the nutrition you need to repair and heal after your workouts.

But imagine you were to incorporate a healthy diet with your exercise routine as well. Now you are working out and you are eating a well-balanced nutritional diet.  How much faster would you achieve the results you desire?

There is an exponential effect that occurs when you apply 2 or more success habits.  Your success doesn’t just double, it triples or quadruples (or greater). If you have only been listening to success audios or watching success videos or attending live events, this is your opportunity to add in a key missing ingredient – reading.

If we were to simply transcribe the audio/video recordings that you have already watched or listened to as a member of the Family Unicity Network and you were to read those transcriptions, the exact same information, presented in a different medium would affect your brain differently.  Engaging a different part of your brain will open up new insights and realizations that you missed in the audio recording. This is why reading is a necessary component in your success.

For ages, information like this has been passed on, both orally and in text.  You may think that you can just listen to audios alone. Maybe you like doing other things while you listen because you want to be efficient, but is this really more efficient?  When you sit and read, you can’t do anything else, you have to give 100% of your attention to what you are doing.  Listening to audio recordings is definitely important and has its benefits, but think about it.  If you get distracted and stop listening to an audio, the audio keeps going.  When you read, you cannot get away with this because reading is a more generative and active process when done correctly.

Information delivered in text is magical and in this blog, it is my desire to not only share information with you, but to teach you how you can get more out of what you are reading so that you can actually use the information to create a better life for yourself.

You’ve already read about why reading is important but did you really get it? Do you really understand how important reading is now that you’ve read those last few paragraphs? Probably not. In fact, you probably didn’t even notice that you didn’t “get it” entirely.  Even as I am pointing it out now, you are still not getting it.  By acknowledging this, you have the opportunity to notice how open and teachable you really are and then make the appropriate adjustments.

The first reason for this is that most people have a damaged relationship to reading.  Perhaps it began when you were young.  We were made to read books that we had no real interest in reading. We got through the book as quickly as we could, because it was homework. Perhaps you have anxiety about reading because you were made to read in front of the class and you didn’t feel confident that you knew all the words.  Or, perhaps you won’t allow yourself the time to sit down and enjoy a good book because you feel like you have so many other “more important” things to do. Whatever the issue may be, it is of paramount importance that you overcome these issues and learn to love reading again.  You must learn to read for your own enjoyment and your own benefit, not because you will be punished or ridiculed if you do not.

The result of these old patterns when it comes to reading is that we end up reading in a more passive way.  We tend not to truly engage with the material in a generative way. When you read, you must pause and reflect.  You must reread a sentence or paragraph over and over again to understand it more deeply.  You must be fully at cause in generating insights for yourself.  Don’t hope the text will do something to you. Expose yourself to the ideas in the text but then take it a step further. Have ideas about the ideas in the text.  Do it right now!  Think about what you are reading.

It isn’t about how many books you read.  The real power of reading comes from the amount of time you spend reading and reflecting on the ideas. You can read the same paragraph or even the same sentence over and over again and get more benefit than if you read 10 books without any generative reflection at all.  It is your insights about what you are reading that really matter.

Right now, we are having a conversation and you have to bring yourself to this conversation.  Don’t just let me talk while you smile and nod and pretend you are listening.  Think about what I’m saying and have a new insight about it.  You may even want to go back and reread this entire post before you move on.  There is information in this post that can change your life and you’ve likely missed it.  You think you got it but there is so much more that you didn’t get.  Go look for it, and if you do, you will be surprised by how much more is in the text than you originally thought.  Engage fully because you will only get what you put into it.

As we continue, only you can generate this kind of active reading.  I may remind you again later but the best way for you to remember is to practice it now.  See the benefits of active reading for yourself.  Have an experience for yourself and you will integrate the learning from this lesson more fully into your mind. If you find that you are getting bored or that the information has become less interesting to you, consider that you are the one who is boring.  You are not being a good conversationalist.  You are not engaging.  When you remember this, you can correct this issue and start to actively read again.

So remember, reading is a success principle AND it is not enough just to read.  You must understand what you are reading.  If you don’t know what a word means, look it up.  You must also reflect on what you are reading and bring yourself to the conversation by generating insights for yourself.  Then, apply your insight in your real life to lock in that lesson.  Then when you come back to the same information and reread it, you will be a new person.  You will be able to go even deeper into your understanding of the principles contained in this blog.

Remember, you think you know it because you read it, but you never know it fully.  There is always more to get and this should be exciting to you.  It is not about reading as many books as you can. It is about spending more time reading, understanding, reflecting, and generating insights that you can apply in your life.

Together, we will go on a journey.  As you read this blog, you will get what you need. As you read, you will find that each blog post comes naturally out of the one before. We are going through this process together and when we have spent some time reflecting on one success principle, the next one will always seems perfect for what you are dealing with in your life right now.  You don’t have to understand why this is so right now.  Just know that all will be revealed in perfect time.  You can do it.  Trust yourself and trust the process.

2 – Closed-Mindedness vs. Open-Mindedness

The first post was about reading in a more active and generative way. Why do you think we would begin a blog this way?  The simple reason is that human beings are generally not great at reading and taking in new information effectively.  What would be the point of taking the time to create all this training if you cannot take it in?

It is crucial to realize that it is not what you eat, but what you digest that makes you strong and healthy.  It is not what you read but what you get out of that reading that will make a difference in your life. Similarly, it is not what I communicate, but what you hear that will impact you. It is up to you to get what you need out of this blog.  The information is there, but you need to see it and hear it.

What works, when training anyone, is to devote adequate attention to learning how to learn. If we don’t actively get better at learning and being teachable then we will always be limited in how effectively we learn, and the results that ensue. The saying goes: Give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish and he eats for life.

Similarly, I could teach you how to play a song on the piano and you would learn to move your fingers to perform that song, but wouldn’t it be better if I taught you how to teach yourself to play a song? With this knowledge you would be able to learn any song you wish for the rest of your life.  Wouldn’t that make more sense?

We must always be aware of how teachable we are because our teachability changes from moment to moment. If you notice that you are not being teachable, you can take responsibility for it and generate a willingness to learn.  Being teachable is an active process and only you have control over your own teachability.  The most teachable person is someone who has found the perfect balance between being closed-minded and being open-minded.

We have been taught in society that open-mindedness is good and that close-mindedness is bad.  This makes total sense.  If you teach the masses to keep their minds open all the time, they will be easier to control, divide and conquer. However, the optimal teachability comes from keeping your mind closed always and being in total control of your ability to open your mind deliberately and let in new information. This is a skill that can be practiced.

Ideally your mind is closed and you are able to consider new information before dismissing it or accepting it.  Don’t just accept or dismiss what you are reading.  Think about it, consider it.  Be willing to change your thinking but do not believe blindly.  Always think for yourself. Be discerning.

Some Pitfalls of Open-Mindedness

When you are too open-minded, you let in all information from multiple sources.  All of this information becomes jumbled up in your mind and it will keep you paralyzed with confusion. You will rarely take appropriate actions because you do not know what information to trust.  You will find it difficult to trust which path to take or to know which course of action will be best. Ultimately you end up not trusting yourself. You become naive, accepting information without thinking critically about it. All new information is weighted the same in your mind and so you cannot learn effectively from a mentor.  You are unable to take charge so you cannot lead yourself or others effectively.

Some Pitfalls of Closed-Mindedness

When you are too closed-minded you let no new information in.  You will continue to act in ways that produce the same results (or lack of results) over and over again.  You are not confident, but arrogant.  You think you know everything (even though you do not) and as a result, you are not teachable. Even if information would be helpful to you, you are closed to it. It becomes difficult to hear the thoughts and opinions of others so your potential for leadership goes out the window. You may have the ability to convince others of your opinions but once they realize you are so stubborn they will not be able to work with you.

Balancing Closed-Mindedness and Open-Mindedness

Imagine your mind is your home. You don’t keep your front door open all the time allowing anyone (thoughts, beliefs and ideas) to come in whenever they choose.  With your home, you keep your door closed always.  This doesn’t mean the door is closed and locked permanently though.  Instead, you are able to invite someone over.  When they knock on the door, you can make sure it is them before letting them in.  If a new person you don’t know knocks on your door, you can crack the door open and consider whether you want to invite them in or not.

Your mind should work in the same way when it comes to letting in new information.  Intelligent people consider new information before accepting or dismissing it.  Discernment is the key.  Take some time to consider whether you tend to be more closed-minded or open-minded.  Go over this post again if you need to, so you can acknowledge the impact your teachability imbalance is having on you and the people around you.
